New England Bay Campsite, Stranraer
We visited this site in May 2008 and we loved it! Location/Access The site is located adjacent to the beach, indeed some of the pitches are just a row of sand dunes from the sea. In that sense, the location could hardly be more ideal or picturesque. The location of the site, relative to anywhere else in Britian gives more of a problem. It's located on a tiny southward spur of Scotland, just North of the border with England. Don't be fooled by the maps, wherever you come from outside South-West Scotland, it will take some time to travel here. To give you an idea, from just seven miles west of Carlisle, it took us nearly three hours to get to the site! That said, when you've arrived and set up, you'll be glad you made the effort. Facilities The facilities include the usual Caravan Club niceties, a small shop, telephone, water, waste water and chemical toilet disposal and even DVD rental and book loan! The toilet blocks are clean, tidy and well arranged. Whilst the showers aren't huge, they were spotless and well presented when we stayed. We visited on May Day Bank Holiday Weekend. When every site we knew of in the Lake District was booked up, this site was half-full! General The views are just amazing, many of the pitches are adjacent to the beach. The pitches nearest to the sea rarely provide sea views, due to a row of sand dunes between the site and the beach. If you want views from your window, pitch in the row behind - they're a little elevated from the sea-side pitches. The pitches behind the front row give the impression of having been scooped out of the thick gorse that covers the site, so privacy is not a problem. Many of the pitches, which are spacious and well designed, are entirely private. The staff were helpful, and I understand some of the local sights, such as Logan Botanical Gardens, are well worth a view, although this isn't the place to come if you want day-after-day of local sightseeing - it is very isolated. Some comments I have read on the internet proclaim this to be the best Caravan Club site in the UK. I don't know if I would go that far, but I can't really imagine many sights beating it on service, price, scenary or availability. For:
